Chlorine dioxide is a highly unstable and reactive gas that acts as a disinfectant because it breaks down (oxidises) the cell membrane of bacteria, fungi, viruses etc.
Chlorine dioxide is broken down very quickly by sunlight, leaving only oxygen and salt (kitchen salt).
